Netflix Case Study Analysis Essay

â€Å"Creativity is concocting new things. Advancement is doing new things.† †Theodore Levitt The significance of this statement wakes up subsequent to perusing the initial three sentences inside this contextual analysis. An announcement by Reed Hastings, the originator and CEO of Netflix. â€Å"Well let’s separate the market into two stages. One is the period of DVD, which tops in five to 10 years and keep going for 20 to 30 years. At that point there is the period of Internet conveyance, which tops 20 or quite a while from now and goes on for 100 years† (Cengage). From the time Hastings established Netflix in 1997, with his underlying on the web DVD rental business thought, there has been numerous variables adjusting the business procedure of the organization inside it’s inward and outside condition that has permitted Netflix to develop to where it is today. Netflix took of rapidly and had just accomplished economies of scale in as right on time as 2000, which coincidently was that year they moved their objective from DVD rentals to gushing video. From that point, Hastings realized that inside time DVD’s would be a relic of times gone by, and online moment spilling was a thing of things to come. He has been imaginative enough to have the option to increase supportable upper hand with different contenders, yet more significantly he has been inventive enough to remain serious with our society’s quickly changing desires for innovation, which is an enormous boundary to this industry. Society’s rising interest for moment Internet spilling is causing their interest for DVD’s to diminish. Hence, it appears just as DVD rentals are beginning to tumble from its pinnacle and consequently moment Internet spilling is beginning to move to the earliest reference point of its pinnacle. All through this report the emphasis will remain on Netflix’s outer condition, interior condition, current procedure, and future suggestions that keep Netflix â€Å"an web based business example of overcoming adversity in an ever-changing business landscape† on account of their ambitious start in the membership DVD rental industry, solid appropriation abilities, and steadfas t clients (Cengage). At the point when initially analyzing a company’s Strategic Management Process it is critical to assess their statement of purpose so as to perceive who they accept they are as an organization just as their vision on how they need to keep on going ahead later on. Netflix is one of a kind for they don't have an authority distributed statement of purpose, but Hastings communicated an away from for the eventual fate of Netflix at a meeting in 2011. These focuses include: â€Å"becoming the best worldwide diversion dissemination administration, permitting amusement content far and wide, making markets that are open to producers, and helping content makers around the globe to locate a worldwide audience†. In the wake of building up a decent comprehension of the company’s statement of purpose the PESTEL (political, condition, social, innovative, conservative, lawful) model is a general rule that assists with dissecting the general condition of the business. Political powers appear to be low with the exception of the latest issue of higher postage costs, which would definitely diminish the DVD rental income. Natural effects on the business are consistently present, however they have next to no impact on this industry. Social elements are amazingly high and praise the Technological components which are additionally extremely high in this industry. When Netflix first began, they were progressively centered around DVD rentals and vanquished their methodology of giving helpful DVD delivering more appropriation places and a productive gracefully chain, which consequently took over numerous physical DVD rental stores. In any case, with the ascent of innovation and the social weights of having the most recent types of electronic gadgets there is a totally new scene of Wi-Fi prepared amusement gadgets that guides in Netflix’s other market, moment Internet gushing. Financial elements are high, however this industry appears to handle them no sweat. In any event, during the extraordinary downturn in 2009, Netflix’s income expanded to $305.7 million in view of expanded client mindfulness and different advantages they give. Ultimately, Legal elements are low, for the greatest legitimate boundary for Netflix is picking up the rights from film studios to get the principal run content as quickly as time permits. When the outsid e condition is summed up a progression of chances and dangers are built up. â€Å"The key for any player in this commercial center is to win the computerized fight† and the key factors so as to do this comprise of: being first to advertise, having the best substance, and scaling benefits (Cengage). In any case, there are innovative dangers that accompany building up these key variables like unlawful downloads and Internet programmers. Along these lines, Netflix needed to remain wary via cautiously looking for indications of programmers. Then again, segment patterns of expanding populace and venture into remote clients like China and India incite certain open doors that give Netflix the capacity to make an upper hand. All things considered, there are five powers of rivalry inside any industry that decide both rivalry and productivity. These powers are entwined with one another and comprise of: Rivalry among Competitors, Power of Buyers, Power of Suppliers, Threat of New Entrants, and Threat of Substitutable Products. The Power of Suppliers contains two unique gatherings. Film studio providers are related with the DVD rental part of Netflix’s administrations and TV stations are related with the Internet gushing viewpoint. The Power of Suppliers is genuinely low for the DVD rental side of the business in light of the fact that the providers depend for the most part on organizations, for example, Netflix to buy their DVDs despite the fact that soon DVDs will be a relic of past times. Nonetheless, Netflix can make manages the film studios to purchase the DVDs in mass and in this way accomplishing economies of scale. This at that point sets a high hindrance for new participants into this part of the business. Be that as it may, the providers are as yet ready to keep up some force by setting the 28-day strategy precluding the arrival of their titles to people in general. The providers have the most force on the Internet gushing side, which lead to serious drawbacks. Right now Netflix, still considers a huge piece of their income from DVD rentals along these lines providers will keep on being hesitant in permitting moment gushing rights without expanding authorizing charges. In this circumstance, the busine ss is increasingly subject to the providers since they need to satisfy their customer’s requests. Alongside this comes the intensity of the purchasers, which is the most steady power in the business. Clients are popular for video dissemination administrations. In any case, they are not faithful to the suppliers, they are just faithful to the substance. Thusly clients will in general have an extremely serious extent of intensity in this industry that is bolstered with the value touchy industry and low (assuming any) exchanging costs. As indicated by the case â€Å"Netflix might be unable to persuade buyers to see content from its administration rather than one of the other numerous new decisions accessible now and expected to appear† (Cengage). Concerning the Substitutional Products power inside the business, Netflix doesn't have a generous danger to different types of visual diversion. In any case, there is a huge absence of brand steadfastness and the greatest replacement danger is seen when considering interchange content suppliers that offer comparative administrations of value and cost. Accordingly, Rivalry is high inside the business and since Netflix is aâ middleman merchant they need to remain serious and inventive. So as to keep up their favorable position they should guarantee high gushing quality and simple availability alongside a reasonable cost. Cost is regularly the main viewpoint wherein businesses contend on. Since Netflix comprises of different sides to their administrations they can disperse their income and use it to accomplish economies of scale making the danger of new contestants on the DVD rental side extremely little since the hindrances are so high. Their productive large number of developing dissemination places give included boundaries too. In any case, on the opposite side the danger of new participants to Internet spilling is high with low boundaries considering the broadly acknowledged Wi-Fi competent gadgets with possible gushing updates. It is expressed that with negligence to many restricting variables â€Å"The organization is plainly centered around gushing, however administrators have since quite a while ago kept up that DVDs, while declining, will be a piece of its business for quite a long time to come† (GIGAOM). Thinking about these powers, the biggest issue that Netflix faces today is being a survivor of their providers while interest for moment gushing is e xpanding quickly and interest for DVD rentals is gradually diminishing. This situation drives the Power of Suppliers to increment, along these lines negatively affecting Netflix’s benefit. Be that as it may, since Netflix had the option to build up a stable early bit of leeway with their notoriety in the wake of commanding the DVD rental side they currently should make sense of how to maintain the manageable upper hand on the moment Internet gushing side also and compensate for their decreasing DVD rental incomes. Next, it is vital to assessing the Internal Environment of the Industry while examining its assets, capacities, and unmistakable abilities so as to check whether the business makes esteem. Assets, for example, Financial, Physical, Human Resources, Innovation, Reputational, and Culture all assumed a job in Netflix and the Industry when all is said in done. Netflix had the option to be imaginative and inventive enough to adjust to the changing business sector on account of Hastings administrative capacities and thoughts. In this way, a large number of their assets continued to capacities and further to

The relationship between marijuana and juvenile delinquency Essay

The connection among pot and adolescent wrongdoing - Essay Example In light of value-based investigation hypothesis, for the current situation, it very well may be reasoned from the physical and incidental proof that my son’s companion has carried out the accompanying criminal infringement: trespass to abiding, burglary, and unlawful ownership of picklocks. Trespass to staying is submitted by an individual who will go into the house or abiding of another without the latter’s earlier assent. For the situation at bar, the simple nearness of my son’s companion inside the house (which is dared to have been shut and incidentally occupied as not so much as a solitary inhabitant was found consequently around then) raises the assumption that he is blameworthy thereof. Around then, nobody could have given him the consent to come inside the house as there was no real inhabitant was there around then. His being my son’s companion doesn’t in any capacity legitimize his interruption into the house without greeting or earlier co nsent. My son’s companion is additionally assumed blameworthy of unlawful ownership of picklocks. I should consider first the way that I am certain, non one in the house has ever had a picklock nor utilizes the equivalent. The way that my son’s companion had the option to go into the house without the help of anyone, or any tenant from inside, ought to be considered corresponding to the nearness of picklock found on the counter extremely close to where I discovered him. Sound judgment would show that the picklock could have been utilized to open the house entryway with the goal for him to pick up passage subsequently. It isn't fundamental however to really observe him in the demonstration of utilizing it as unimportant belonging is adequate to implicate him. Burglary could likewise be considered against him corresponding to my adornments which I discovered lying in the counter close to him. Obviously, I ought to be cautious with the way that neither I nor anyone from my family in the house had put the gems there. Furthermore, gems are not generally positioned in or close to the kitchen yet inside the room. For instance, in the event that I ordinarily keep my gems inside my room bureau, the minor reality that they were taken outside the bureau (where they ought to be), as of now fulfills the wrongdoing of robbery. The gems need not be effectively taken outside the house in light of the fact that the cheat has just practiced authority over the subject gems when he took them outside the room bureau where they are kept. There is no other legitimate assumption that could be made on the data of the nearness of my adornments in the kitchen alongside the guilty party whose nearness in the house is under inquiry. Then again, the way that he scents of pot isn't adequate to arraign him for infringement of the law on restricted or directed medications. On this viewpoint, the mediation of an expert is vital so as to appropriately decide his condition. In the event that it is sure, at that point he is liable thereof. In the event that it is negative, at that point he isn't. I can't depend altogether on my instinct as I may not be viewed as a specialist in deciding the smell of cannabis. In light of the realities given and conversation above, I will do the accompanying: First, I will summon the police right. This is for the

Geography Teaching Methods Why Should Geography Free Essays

The   term   geography   refers   to   the   study   of   the   location   and   distribution   of   living   things   and   the   earth features   among   which   they   (The   World   Book,   2001). It   describes   its   physical   features,   resources, climate,   soils,   plants,   animals,   and    peoples   and   their   distribution. Geography,   in   general,   has   several objectives. We will write a custom essay sample on Geography Teaching Methods: Why Should Geography or any similar topic only for you Order Now The   main   objective   of   the   geography   subject   is   to   develop   awareness   of   the   relation between   nature   and   the   man made   environment. It   provides   the   basis   for   understanding   population development   and   the   distribution   of   resources,   explaining   similarities   and   differences   and   discussing change   processes. It   shall   also   contribute   to   understanding   and   mastering   the   great   amount   of information   in   our   time. Therefore,   this   paper   discuses   the   view   that   geography   as   a  subject  should  be made  a  core  subject. To   begin   with,   geography   provides   the   basis   for   understanding   population   development   and   the distribution   of   resources,   explaining   similarities   and   differences   and   discussing   change   processes. The subject   also   gives   insight   into   how   natural   resources,   weather   and   climate   have   provided   the   basis   for the   settlement   and   development   of   communities. Furthermore,  Geography  also  creates  understanding  of why   resources   are    important   for   global   production,   division   of   labour and   settlement. Population development   and   global   economic   processes   influence   economic   development   and   the   global distribution   of   goods. The   Geography   subject   provides   an   overview   and   explains   the   localisation   of cities   and   the   scope   of   natural   and  man made  conditions  on  earth  (Tunney,  1976). Therefore,  it  is  wise enough   that   the   government   should   design    a   curriculum   that   considers   geography   as   a  core  subject  just like  English  as  it  is  in  Malawi. The   other   thing   is   that,   looking   at   its   objectives? Geography   subject   is   contributing  to  the  understanding and   mastering   the   great   amount  of  information  in  these  days. More  knowledge  motivates  and  stimulates the   ability   to  analyse  critically  and  understand  comprehensively. This  can  give   the  pupils  a  good  basis  for participating   in   the   development   of   society   in   a   constructive   way. An   important   objective   of   the geography   subject   is   also   to   develop   the   pupils’   ability   to   be   tolerant   and   understand   their   global co responsibilities. This   only   shows   that   Geography   has  a  wider  range  in  the  sense  that  it  draws  largely from   the   natural   sciences   and   social   sciences,   such   as,   geology,   meteorology,   botany,   zoology, economics,  and  history. In   addition,   in   order   to   improve   geographic   understanding   to   the   general   public:   Increased   research attention   is   given   to   certain   core   methodological   and   conceptual   issues   in   geography   that   are  especially relevant   to   society’s   concerns. More   emphasis   should   be   placed   on   priority driven,   cross cutting projects. Increased  emphasis   should  be  given  to  research  that  improves  the  understanding  of  geographic literacy,   learning,   and   problem   solving   and  the  roles  of  geographic  information  in  education  and  decision making,   including   interactive   learning   strategies   and   spatial   decision   support   systems. This   helps   the government   to   manage   and   run   its affairs   with   the   intention   of   developing   them. Therefore,   through geographical   knowledge,  one  is  able  to  operate  in  several  departments  of  the  government  hence  meeting the  full  utilization  of  limited  resources  a  country  could  have. What   is   more,   the   government   and/or   the   non governmental   organization   should   take   part   in   the improvement   of   geographic   literacy. Geography  education  standards  and   other  guidelines  for  improved geography   education   in   the   schools   should   be   examined   to   identify   subjects   where   geography’s  current knowledge   base   needs   strengthening. A   significant   national   program   should   be   established   to   improve the   geographic   competence   of   the   republic   of   Malawi’s   general   population   as   well   as   of   leaders   in business,   government,   and   non governmental  interest  groups  at  all  levels. In  addition,  linkages  should  be strengthened   between   academic   geography   and   users   of   its   research. Also   concerned   and   non concerned   parties   need   to   strengthen   geographic   institutions. Since   geography   has   a   wider   range   in  its operation,   a   high   priority   should   be   placed   on   increasing  professional  interactions  between  geographers and   colleagues   in   other   sciences. A   specific   effort   too,   should   be   made   to   identify   and   address disparities   between   the   growing   demands   on   geography   as   a   subject   and   the   current   capabilities   of eography   to   respond   as   a   scientific   discipline. A  specific  effort  should  be  made  in  order  to  identify  and examine   needs   and   opportunities   forà ‚   professional   geography   to   focus   its   research   and   teaching   on certain   specific   problems   or   niches,   given   limitations   on   the   human   and   financial   resources   of   the discipline. University   and   college   administrators   should   alter   reward   structures   for   academic geographers   to   encourage,   recognize,   and   reinforce   certain   categories   of   professional   activity   that   are sometimes   underrated. To   encourage   implementation   of   these   recommendations:   Geographic   and related   organisations   should    work   together   to   develop   and   execute   a   plan    to   implement   the recommendations  in  this  department. Lastly,   it   should   be   mentioned,   however,   that   geography   being   a   multi dimensional   subject   that   is,   it encompasses   several   subjects  or  disciplines. The  case  of  History,  History  and  History  Teaching   play  an important   role   in   developing   national   identity. Against   the   background   of   ethnic,   cultural   and   national conflicts   in   South   Eastern   Europe   history    teaching   was   often   used   as   a   tool   for   promoting   nationalistic ideologies. History   textbooks   have,   in   many   cases,   been   dominated   by  biased  historical  interpretations. Sensitive   historical   issues   and   groups,   such   as   the   history   of   social   and   ethnic   minorities,   the   history   of neighbouring   countries   have   often   been   excluded   from   the   textbooks. They  are  normally  given  the  chance  to  choose  the  subjects  to  be studied   in   order   to   acquire   their   certificate   at   the   end   of   their   first   year   of   post primary   education. It   is usually   5 8  subjects  inclusive  of  English. Successful Communication in an Organization-Myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Identify examples (three at most) of successful and/or unsuccessful communication exchanges/processes you have experienced in the workplace (or other situations if you have not worked in an organisation) and analyse these situations by applying elements of communication modelling to demonstrate and evaluate these communication attempts. Answer: Business communication is an extremely important issue with the work environment becoming more diverse. The given essay describes to such situations where the communication was unsuccessful (Chaney and Martin 2013). A detailed analysis of the scenario has been done thereby explaining what went wrong. The applicable communication model has also been given, the application of which would have made the communication in the situation successful. The first scenario is a situation that took place while I was working as an intern manager at the book caf in 2016. During my experience there, I was assigned with the responsibility of managing five interns who were working part time during the summers. These interns had to work under my guidance and it was my responsibility to make sure that these people would work properly. I used to conduct weekly meetings whereby I used to specify certain tasks for each intern and provide them with targets as to what had to be done. All the interns were responsible and innovative when it came to fulfilling the needs of the customer. During the summers, the tourist footfall is extremely high in the city and hence, the number of visits visiting the caf is very high. However, one of the interns was not as responsible as the others were and behaved in a clumsy manner by not listening to my instructions and not good at adhering to the needs of the consumers, he used to drop the coffee and was unable to remember the customer requests. One evening, I conducted a meeting once again and asked them to work hard and try and not be clumsy. These interns listened properly and paid attention except the clumsy one who seemed inattentive. During the meeting, I had assigned specific tables for all the interns that they would be catering to (Bovee, Thill and Raina 2016). The clumsy intern John, did not listen which tables were assigned to him and this lead to a lot of confusion among the customers and other members alike. He was intervening in the business of other interns as well, which was spoiling their impression in front of the customers as well. Hence, it could be said that this was a situation of unsuccessful communication whereby as a team leader I failed to encourage the intern to perform well and as a team member, even he failed to take my orders and to perform well. The next section analysis the situation. The message, which was sent, was about the tables, which had to be taken care of by the intern. Due to inattentiveness and lack of interest, the intern did not listen to the message and failed to decode it. The interference was caused by the lack of interest from the side of the intern. The meeting took place during the lean hours and therefore no noise caused the distraction (Adler, Elmhorst and Lucas 2012). The message, which was sent across to the student, was consistent with the leadership and management communication in the caf as it was conveyed during a proper weekly meeting, which is of high importance. One of the elements of communication that might be absent in the scene could have been the lack of physical evidence. Had I as a team leader, would have conveyed the message to the intern along with providing him a physical paper message which described the table allotment then I believe the communication would have been more successful (Guffey and Loewy 2012). There were no cultural issues involved in the particular communication, as the intern was a resident off the city and accustomed to the way of life. According to me, the communication process failed because the intern was unable to take in the information that was given to him because of barriers like unable to pay attention. The intern was unable to pay attention and did not think that the information was relevant enough. He misjudged the information and that lead to a failure. The coming section applies the communication model to the situation. The Process Model can be applied in the situation. Let us first understand what this model is all about. The process model states that two-way communication is extremely important in any process. The sender of the message sends the message to the receiver via a particular medium, which then is perceived, by the receiver of the message. The receiver of the message needs to apply his or her perception while decoding the particular message (Bove and Thill 2013). This is where the problems begin. The way a receiver decodes a message plays an important message. The receiver then has to provide a feedback to the sender. This completes the process model. However, the process model of communication is interrupted by various barriers. When these barriers are present, the communication often becomes a failure. These barriers can be anything that causes a barrier in communication like of attention and so on (Meredith 2012). Had this model been applied in the particular situation, the receiver o f the message would have had to give a feedback to the sender then maybe the intern would have responded to the leader and the leader would have understood about the barrier, which would have then led to a successful communication process. The next situation took place when I was leading a team in my college. During college, various projects are given out to the students. Various teams are formed whereby the students belong to diverse backgrounds and cultures. One such group was formed where the members belonged to different departments and different cultures as well. There were five students each from a different company like Singapore, China, India, Australia and England. These students were unaware of one another but had to work together for a project (Gibson 2015). The backgrounds of the culture were bound to affect the situation. The leader of the team was an Indian student. One such event happened where the Indian student brought gifts for us, which he had bought the earlier day from a shop. Giving out gifts in the Indian culture is often considered as a sign of respect and friendship. He had given these gifts out to us as a token of friendship. He gave us the instructions for the project and thereby teased us th at now we need to work better and listen to him more often. The team leader meant it as a joke and was teasing us (Cobley and Schulz 2013). However, this kind of behaviour is unacceptable in other cultures like China. The student from China considered it to be professional project thereby was very conservative in his mannerism. When the team leader gave out the gift, the Chinese student felt that it was disrespect because gift taking is considered to be unethical in China (Ainsworth 2013). The student did not want to bring any friendship in this project, as he took it as a serious affair. Hence, he went and complained to the lecturer who then changed his group. The following section critically analysis the situation. The reason why this situation took place was the cultural background of the student. The Chinese culture is very different from the culture of the other nations and there exist different norms and rules pertaining to the particular country. In China, gift taking is considered to be unethical and therefore, the student preferred to back out from the group because he preferred not to indulge in this activity, which was unethical according to him. Hence, the communication process between the team leader and the team members failed. The reason behind this failure can be contributed to the cultural difference between the two given cultures. In India, as mentioned earlier gift taking and other activities is taken to be a sign of respect but in China these behaviour is considered to be unethical. Therefore, the leader should have understood the situation before conducting an activity, which was not considered good by the person in the group and joked about the gifts, which further triggered the situation (McQuail and Windahl 2015). It is the responsibility of the leader to understand the mindset and culture of the people in his team. The coming section applies the communication model in the situation. The cultural model can be applied in the given situation. The cultural model states that as the society has become more diverse people from different backgrounds and cultures have become closer. However, each person carries their own culture with them and for some people the culture value of the other person might conflict with their own cultural belief. Hence, it is due to this that the communication process between different people has become more complex (Alberts, Nakayama and Martin 2015). Different groups involved have a different meaning of certain terms and behaviour involved. Hence, this model suggests that while in a professional communication context, the parties at communication should be more considerate about the beliefs, values and culture of the sender and be aware of the same components of a receiver. This model suggests that the parties at communication should be more aware of the other person`s interpretation (Sharifian and Jamarani 2013). The leader when giving out a message should reflect and understand that the recovery will not be able to understand the contest behind the message at one goes. This belief will help the sender to understand that he needs to dominate the message accordingly. In the given situation, the Indian team leader should have understood the background of the Chinese student before gifting him and joking about it. In the same way the Chinese student should have also understood the background behind the Indian student`s motive before acting in this manner. If this model were followed, the communication would not have failed. Silver Facts (Atomic Number 47 and Element Symbol Ag)

Silver Facts (Atomic Number 47 and Element Symbol Ag) Silver is a transition metal with element symbol Ag and atomic number 47. The element is found in jewelry and currency for its beauty and value and in electronics for its high conductivity and malleability. Silver  Basic Facts Atomic Number: 47 Symbol: Ag Atomic Weight: 107.8682 Discovery: Known since prehistoric time. Man learned to separate silver from lead as early as 3000 B.C. Electron Configuration: [Kr]5s14d10 Word Origin: Anglo-Saxon Seolfor or siolfur; meaning silver, and Latin argentum meaning silver Properties: The melting point of silver is 961.93 °C, boiling point is 2212 °C, specific gravity is 10.50 (20 °C), with a valence of 1 or 2. Pure silver has a brilliant white metallic luster. Silver is slightly harder than gold. It is very ductile and malleable, exceeded in these properties by gold and palladium. Pure silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals. Silver possesses the lowest contact resistance of all metals. Silver is stable in pure air and water, although it tarnishes upon exposure to ozone, hydrogen sulfide, or air containing sulfur. Uses: The alloys of silver have many commercial uses. Sterling silver (92.5% silver, with copper or other metals) is used for silverware and jewelry. Silver is used in photography, dental compounds, solder, brazing, electrical contacts, batteries, mirrors, and printed circuits. Freshly deposited silver is is the best known reflector of visible light, but it rapidly tarnishes and loses its reflectance. Silver fulminate (Ag2C2N2O2) is a powerful explosive. Silver iodide is used in cloud seeding to produce rain. Silver chloride can be made transparent and is also used as a cement for glass. Silver nitrate, or lunar caustic, is used extensively in photography. Although silver itself is not considered toxic, most of its salts are poisonous, due to the anions involved. Exposure to silver (metal and soluble compounds) should not exceed 0.01 mg/M3 (8 hour time-weighted average for a 40 hour week). Silver compounds can be absorbed into the circulatory system, with deposition of reduced silver in body tissues. This may result in argyria, which is characterized by a greyish pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes. Silver is germicidal and may be used to kill many lower organisms without harm to higher organisms. Silver is used as coinage in many countries. Sources: Silver occurs native and in ores incuding argentite (Ag2S) and horn silver (AgCl). Lead, lead-zinc, copper, copper-nickel, and gold ores are other prinicipal sources of silver. Commercial fine silver is at least 99.9% pure. Commercial purities of 99.999% are available. Element Classification: Transition Metal Silver Physical Data Density (g/cc): 10.5 Appearance: silvery, ductile, malleable metal Isotopes: There are 38 known isotopes of silver ranging from Ag-93 to Ag-130. Silver has two stable isotopes: Ag-107 (51.84% abundance) and Ag-109 (48.16% abundance). The Margaret Mead and derek Freeman debate vs Lets' Abolish high Essay

The Margaret Mead and derek Freeman debate vs Lets' Abolish high School by robert Epstein - Essay Example A second article titled The Margaret Mead and Derek Freeman Debate, written by Ann M. Bender, Trevor Humphries, and Trevor Michael illustrates the ongoing contention brought on by the nature versus nurture debate. We are a product of both biology and culture and both Margaret Mead's book Coming of Age in Samoa, as well as Epstein's article, reinforce this understanding of the debate about how much of our teenage years are a product of biology and how much comes from society. Epstein's article, which calls for a rethinking of adolescence, traces a logical path that concludes that our concept of teenager is a product of our culture. Indeed, Epstein's book, which served as a basis for this article, has been the subject of a considerable number of positive reviews. Authors, professional psychiatrists, and other academic professionals have stated their acceptance and praise. Epstein does make several salient points about our view of the teenage years, how we got this way, and the potential problems that it causes. Yet, Epstein seems to contradict his own view of nature. He seemingly supports the nature argument by stating, "technically speaking we're not really children anymore, and presumably through most of human history we bore our young when we were quite young ourselves". However, in the same writing he argues about the impact of society when he laments the teenage years as a time when he "couldn't own property or do any interesting or fulfilling work, and he had no choice but to attend high school for several more years before getting on with his 'real' life". While biology propels the body into adulthood, society meters its progress and deliberates the impact of socialization. Unfortunately, Mead's book, which also found that teenagers are a product of their culture, was heavily criticized and its results were questioned. In fact, both books highlight the need for teaching children how to learn, and the vital skill of being able to think and write critically. These are traits of nurture that nature could never provide. Margaret Mead made several of the same points as Epstein in her book, yet was heavily criticized by Derek Freeman. Though Freeman's criticism largely rested on the quality of the process and not the results, his criticism does attempt to neutralize the view that adolescence is the product of culture. Clearly, both Epstein and Mead were correct in their assessment that adolescence is molded from cultural expectations. We see this when a young man steps up to be the breadwinner when a father has suddenly disappeared from the family scene. It is apparent when a young girl becomes the homemaker when the family faces life without their mother. Freeman, though maybe technically correct, did sociology and anthropology a disservice by diminishing the importance of Mead's work and her revolutionary insights. Epstein's view that we should teach our children how to learn and send them off as teenagers to discover knowledge makes more sense in a globalized community with few borders or obstacles to information. In conclusion, the ages old argument about nature versus nurture is not an either or and exclusive argument. Teenagers are molded by human nature as well as the society in which they are

Impact That Mental Health Of Individuals Psychology Essay

Impact That Mental Health Of Individuals Psychology Essay A mental illness is a health problem that significantly affects how a person feels, thinks, behaves, and interacts with other people, the term mental disorder is also used to refer to these health problems. Mental health problems also interfere with how a person thinks, feels, and behaves, but to a lesser extent than mental illness. Mental health problems are more common and include the mental ill health that can be experienced temporarily as a reaction to the stresses of life. Mental health problems are less severe than mental illnesses, but may develop into a mental illness if they are not effectively dealt with. This study examines the impact mental illness has on family members. When people first knew about mental illness they thought it was demon possession, but today research has shown the effects that psychology has on treatment and recovery. This qualitative research was done in the area of La Brea, with questionnaires being randomly given out to 25 families. Before they answered the questionnaire they will be questioned on mental illness and given some information about the different types. After filling out the questionnaire they are going to have a choice to drop it into my mail box or personally hand it in. The results show that many people are affected by mental illness especially young adults which can have many effects on the family, like financial stress, emotional and feelings of guilt. Mental illness can affect any one at all ages, gender, cultures, educational and income levels. What is important is the support the individual and family gets, therefore by supporting the family members it becomes easier for them to care for the sick person. Mental health awareness should be done in communities to increase peoples understanding towards a greater mental health society so there can be less stigmatization. Introduction Background of the Problem Mental illness has its earliest history of the healing arts; there has been an evolution of theories regarding the root causes of mental illness. Early writings from such ancient civilizations as those of Greece, Rome, India, and Egypt focused on demonic possession as the cause; this concept eventually disappeared only to resurface again in the Middle Ages in Europe, along with inadequate treatment of the mentally ill. Demons or foul spirits were believed to attach themselves to individuals and make them depressed (poor-spirited) or mad. The word  mad  became an early synonym for  psychosis. Unfortunately, the possessed included people with seizure disorders as well as others were suffering from what are now known to be medical disorders. Few genuinely helpful treatments were available to relieve the suffering of the mentally ill. By the eighteenth century they began to look at mental illness differently. It was during this time period that madness began to be seen as an illness beyond the control of the person rather than the act of a demon, and due to this, thousands of people were confined to dungeons of daily torture and were released to asylums where medical forms of treatment began to be investigated. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, several European neurologists began actively investigating the causes of mental illness. Chief among them, and destined to change forever the understanding of mental illness, was Sigmund Freud. Although psychology and psychiatry have advanced considerably since Freud, his explorations were revolutionary. Freud introduced the concepts of the unconscious and the ego to modern thought, and reintroduced the ancient art of dream interpretation, but from a psychological standpoint. Freud also regarded human psychological states as an energy system in which blockages in the flow of thought would result in disease or illness, expressed as mental or emotional loss of balance. He introduced the notion of a talking cure; through the use of  talk therapy alone, and this showed many improvements to patients. Today, the medical model continues to be a driving force in the diagnosing and treatment of mental illness, although research has shown the powerful effects that psychology has on a persons recovery. Statement of the Problem What is the impact that mental health of individuals has on the lives of family members? Purpose of the Study The intent of this study is to understand how families cope with a member which suffers with mental illness. This study also seeks to explore how mental illness affects them and the person as they interact with other in society. Scope of the Study This study will assist me the student in my studies to gain an understanding and knowledge about mental illness. The result of this study will encourage people to know that mental illness is not a life sentence and that people who suffer from mental illness can recover where they can live normal lives. Definition of Terms Mental Illness- mental illness is a health problem that significantly affects how a person feels, thinks, behaves, and interacts with other people, the term mental disorder is also used to refer to these health problems. Diminished to make smaller or less or to cause to appear so. Depression may be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps. Bipolar Disorder bipolar disorder is a condition in which people go back and forth between periods of a very good or irritable mood and  depression. The mood swings between mania and depression can be very quick. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviours that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions). Panic Disorder panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder in which you have repeated attacks of intense fear that something bad will happen. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) post-traumatic stress disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. It can occur after youve seen or experienced a traumatic event that involved the threat of injury or death. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviours. CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders, including  phobias, addiction, depression and anxiety. Interpersonal Therapy Interpersonal  therapy  focuses on the interpersonal relationships of the depressed person. The idea of interpersonal therapy is that  depression can be treated by improving the communication patterns and how people relate to others. Psychosis psychosis is a loss of contact with reality that usually includes: false beliefs about what is taking place or who one is (delusions) and seeing or hearing things that arent there (hallucinations). Stigmatization stigma is a perceived negative attribute that causes someone to devalue or think less of the whole person. People tend to distance themselves from individuals in stigmatized groups, to blame individuals in these groups for the perceived negative attributes, and to discriminate against and diminish the stigmatized individuals. LITERATURE REVEW What is the impact of mental health of individuals on the lives of family members? Mental illness has been an area under discussion and was bounded with mystery and fear, but at present, there have been remarkable improvement in our understanding and, especially in our ability to offer effective treatments. However, questions about mental illness often go unanswered and stand in the way of people receiving help. Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a persons thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life. Mental health  refers to our cognitive, and/or emotional wellbeing it is all about how we think, feel and behave. Mental health, if somebody has it, can also mean an absence of a mental disorder. Approximately 25% of people in the UK have a mental health problem during their lives. The USA is said to have the highest incidence of people diagnosed with mental health problems in the developed world. Your mental health can affect your daily life, relationships and even your physical health. Mental health also includes a persons ability to enjoy life to attain a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder; post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with mental illness recovery is possible. Mental illnesses affect people of any age, race, religion, or income. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan. Mental illness can be treated with the use of psychosocial treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, peer support groups and other community services can also be components of a treatment plan and that assist with recovery. It cannot be overcome through will power and are not related to a persons character or intelligence. Mental illness usually strike individuals in the prime of their lives, often during adolescence and young adulthood. All ages are susceptible, but the young and the old are especially vulnerable. Without treatment the consequences of mental illness for the individual and society are staggering: unnecessary disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide and wasted lives. It is very critical and of vital importance that mental illness is identified for effective recovery to be accelerated and the further harm related to the course of illness is minimized. The exact causes of mental disorders are unknown, but an explosive growth of research has brought us closer to the answers. We can say that certain inherited dispositions interact with triggering environmental factors. Poverty and stress are well-known to be bad for your health-this is true for mental health and physical health. In fact, the distinction between mental illness and physical illness can be misleading. Like physical illnesses, mental disorders can have a biological nature. Many physical illnesses can also have a strong emotional component. According to WHO (World Health Organization), mental health is  a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. WHO stresses that mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. The NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health, USA) mental disorders are common in the USA and internationally. Approximately 57.7 million Americans suffer from a mental disorder in a given year that is approximately 26.2% of adults. However, the main burden of illness is concentrated in about 1 in 17 people (6%) who suffer from a serious mental illness. Approximately half of all people who suffer from a mental disorder probably suffer from another mental disorder at the same time, experts say. Scientists, psychiatrists, and other health care professionals know that the brain is made up in large part of essential fatty acids, water and other nutrients. The evidence is growing and becoming more compelling that diet can play a significant role in the care and treatment of people with mental health problems, including depression,  ADHD  (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) to name but a few. According to a Swedish study, half of the family members have had to give up their own recreational pursuits. The burdens of caring for a patient at home are considerable. They often affect the caring relatives social and leisure activities, and financial problems arise frequently. Relatives have difficulties in understanding and coming to terms with illness-related behaviour. Negative symptoms are often a particular problem. Despite their burden, relatives do not complain much, although they receive little support, advice or information from the professionals engaged in treating the patient; much is now known about the difficulties relatives face, but we still need to know how they can best be helped. Todays model of psychiatric care recognizes the importance of families as part of the treatment team. Enlightened interventions which help families struggling with child abuse and neglect, domestic and community violence, substance abuse, or school failure increasingly integrate psychiatric consultation into their programs. Any or all of these interventions may be used in tailoring a treatment plan for patients. Methodology Mental illness affects many individuals in society, some known and others unknown. People who is affected by mental illness needs the support from family members in the process of their recovery, therefore it is extremely important that they have this which will make a major difference to their well being. This study is a qualitative research and will be done with the use of questionnaires which will be given out to 25 families in the area of La Brea. They are going to be informed that a study is being done, in the highest of confidence and it is part of my course of study. The respondents will just have to fill out the questionnaire without their names or addresses, after it is filled out they can drop it into my mail box or they can personally hand it in. The results of these questionnaires are going to be organized by tallying each question to understand how many people said what, and it will be presented through the use of either charts, tables and graphs. This study on mental illness aims at investigating, How many people suffer from mental illness within their family? What did they do to assist? How they felt when their family member got sick? Were they hospitalized or they got private treatment? What support factors were there? Was there any stigmatization from anyone? This study is going to have some unavoidable limitations, which can be the time limit of eight weeks, this research is being conducted in one limited area and the group chosen may not represent the majority suffering from mental illness. Data Sample The participants for this research were selected based on their availability, their willingness to participate due to the understanding that this is just for research purposes and their knowledge that mental illness is a matter people work with everyday. A selection of 25 participants will take part in the study in the area of La Brea. In terms of ethnic background (20) 75% African and (5) 25%East Indian background, with about 20 female and 5 male ranging from the ages 15 to 65. The participants focused on in this study have had or have family members with mental health issues. Results Figure 1 Figure one shows that in the district of La Brea, 60% of the homes are of African descent, 20% are of East Indian, there is no Spanish, 12%are of Mixed Ethnicity and 8% are of another descent. Figure 2 Figure two shows that in La Brea, there are 40% of nuclear families, 40% of extended families and 20% of single parent families. Figure 3 Figure 3 shows that 80% said yes that their family suffered from mental illness are 80% and 20% said no. Figure 4 Mentally ill people are of different ages therefore; figure 4 shows that the highest age range is persons in the age group twenty years at 32% which indicates that younger people suffer from mental illness, then thirty five years at 28%, twenty five years at 16%, thirty eight years at 12%, and eighteen years at 4%. Figure 5 Figure 5 shows that more males than females suffer from mental illness as 60% of males and 40% of females has at some time in their life suffered from this sickness. Figure 6 Treatment can range be medication, counselling, change of diet or other which is a combination of two or all three. Medication was the highest being 60%, counselling and other had 20% each. Figure 7 Mental illness can have many effects on family members as 40% were stressed, 20% each became scared and confused while 12% were sad as too the fact that their family is suffering from this and 8% were helpless because they did not know how to deal with it. Discussion This study looked at the impact of mental illness of individuals on the lives of family members which can be described as a painful and sometimes traumatic experience. The majority of persons said that they had a family member who suffered from mental illness which became a bit difficult for them to go through, as some felt isolated while others needed help and support for themselves. Some family members also felt guilty and shame because they thought that they were to blame for the illness and not knowing how to handle this type of crisis. Referring to the literature todays model of psychiatric care recognizes the importance of families as part of the treatment process. Scientists and psychiatrists clames that diet can play a significant role in the care and treatment process. It also states that more males than females suffer from mental illness and people between the ages of 20-35 years are highly vulnerable to this illness. Therefore, this study indicates that mental illness is real, it is treatable by medication, therapy and other modalities, as psychiatrists help patients to understand their illness. My recommendations after doing this research on mental illness many people were not aware that there are different types and help is available. I would recommend that lectures, flyers and having activities where the community can interact with each other to increase awareness on mental illness. Conclusion Mental illness can have a devastating effect on an individual, his or her family, friends, and on the community in many ways.   How it affects the individual is obvious, reduced ability to care for themselves, strong negative emotions, distorted thoughts, inappropriate behaviour, and reduced ability to maintain a relationship are only a few possible outcomes.   On friends and family, it can be a major responsibility to care for someone suffering from a mental illness, the emotional and behavioural components of some illnesses can be very difficult at times to understand and to deal with.   Mental illness also affects the community due to the high incidence of homelessness and unemployment in some serious disorders such as schizophrenia. We as a society are starting to see that depression doesnt mean weakness, that anxiety doesnt mean fear, and that schizophrenia doesnt mean violence.   We finally understand that needing help for mental or emotional reasons does not represent a character flaw. Weve got a long way to go, but compared to the time when this was seen as demonic possession, and even compared to a few years ago, weve already come a great distance. Lifestyle of Rococo Era

Rococo emerged in the 18th century as a French art and design style, as well as a way of life for many during that time. Rococo works, designs and lifestyles are characterized by elegant and ornate fixtures, furniture, small sculptures, various ornamental mirrors, as well as different tapestries, reliefs, and wall paintings that compliment the architecture they are placed in. Rococo is not only expressed in the arts, but also in the lifestyles of those who lived during that time. The Rococo era encompassed not only visual arts, but also the way people lived along the era. Looking closely at where the term Rococo came from, we could see that it has roots from the French word rocaille, or shell, which is the most common motif during that time, and also the Italian term barococo or the Baroque style itself. Rococo has been associated with the love of shell-like curves, and the focus on decorative arts. This could be considered as the prevailing fashion statement at that time, where most of the designs of dresses prints and more are related to that of the shell. It was fashion like no other, where curves and other shell like decorations are evident in most pieces of art works. The fist manifestation of the Rococo Era was in the decorative arts and the interior designs. This is accompanied by a change in leadership, where when the King Louis XV succeeded the throne, there were also changes done in the court artists, thus affecting the general artistic fashion. The lavish designs of the Baroque designs slowly faded as the previous king neared his reign’s end. Because of this, the designs that emerged from that were more on the lighter elements, as well as emphasis given on the curves and the various natural patterns. When it comes to the daily life of aristocrats during the Rococo period, it is characterized by a grand lifestyle, where it is full of leisure and recreation, a celebration of how they look at life: grand. Aristocrats had their houses ornamented with delicate gilded furniture, as well as wall decorations. What matters in the Rococo lifestyle is how grand and bountiful it looks to others. This can be seen with architecture in Rococo era, where most of its style is limited to the exterior, wherein its facade is ornamented with other facades. This is a manifestation that Rococo lifestyle is mainly for show, or what is seen by others in the outside. The Rococo era is also characterized as a fanciful and often playful in nature, where the people living in that time were free-spirits, easy-going, and leisure-loving people. Their life depended on their extravagant fashion, as it is a very effective way to express them as to who they really are. As an emergence of the Baroque era, the people living in the Rococo times loved ornately designed dresses, with intricate details of shell-like structures which are very colourful as well as expensive to purchase. What matters to these people is how they would look to others, despite all the money they have spent. The Rococo era can be credited as a movement in the arts during the early 18th century in France. This has emerged from the Baroque era, which was very evident during the age or period of Enlightenment. It is right about the time to face new ideas about the existence of man and to introduce this to the people. The Rococo movement is basically the visual representation of the optimism in which the populace felt in response to the awakening of ideas regarding the human existence. Rococo in its real essence can be considered as both the rise and fall of the Baroque art and era. The emergence of the Rococo era can be considered as the artists as well as the society’s reaction to the heavy works that the Baroque style has created. Rococo symbolized changed, a movement from the grand manner of an artwork as well as a lifestyle, towards a lighter more charming manner which began in French architectural works at the end of Louis the XIVs reign. It has quickly spread all over Europe, arousing the interest of the artists in the region. This is a great event in the context of visual arts, as Rococo presented or portrayed a world outside the realms of our understanding. Rococo was considered to be an art which portrayed another world outside our own, a world of artificiality, make believe, as well as game playing and leisure loving. It is a lifestyle dependent of a person’s stature, as t was considered to be a way of the aristocracy. It is the reflection of how these aristocracies lived their own lives, emphasizing on their indulgences, their wants, and even their utter greed. This is aside from the fact that these aristocracies should be the ones who should help those who were in need. These lifestyles are usually unreflective of their ways that’s why they lack morality, self-discipline, reason and more. The Rococo era is a very colourful part of man’s attempt to understand more about the world through arts. As an emergence of the Baroque era, the Rococo aims to address the shortcomings experienced by those who were from the Baroque era. The Rococo can be considered as a revolution, a movement which everyone anticipates to take over as soon as opportunity tells to do so. As a part of the human lifestyle, the Rococo era gives us another perspective on reality. Works Cited: Rococo Art.
